China To Open Facility For Private Jets

August 26, 2009

FROM AVWEB

China will open its first facility for private jets next year at Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport, sometime before the World Expo opens there in May, Shanghai Daily reported this week. The project is already under construction. The 10,000-square-foot private-jet terminal will provide its own security inspections, quarantine facilities and customs, separate from the other air passenger traffic. A hangar will provide space for up to three jets. Officials said up to 4,000 private jets will arrive in Shanghai during the Expo, according to Shanghai Daily. That’s about twice as many private jet flights as the entire country now handles in a year.

The World Expo will be open from May 1 to Oct. 31 next year, and up to 70 million visitors are expected for a “grand gathering of the world cultures,” according to the event’s Web site. More than 20,000 events will be held at up to three dozen venues around the city.

Private Planes Get Needed Lift

Bill Clinton may have rescued more than two journalists. He also may have helped salvage the image of private jets.

The ex-president traveled by private jet for his unofficial trip to North Korea. Dow Chemical said its corporate plane was used for part of the mission. Private-jet operator Avjet touted its services (as well as the sky-high costs: $20,000 for fuel alone), while Hollywood mogul Steve Bing provided his plane and will pay $200,000 to offset expenses.

Mr. Clinton wasn’t the only one helping the ailing private-jet sector. The House — not known as a friend of the private-jet set of late — agreed to spend $550 million to expand Congress’s private-jet fleet.

The Pentagon had sought to buy one Gulfstream V and one business-class equivalent of a Boeing 737 to replace aging planes, plus purchase two more 737s being leased for the fleet it operates for the legislative branch. House lawmakers approved funds to buy those planes and an additional two 737s and two Gulfstreams.

They aren’t buying any old planes. They are getting business-class equivalents of a Boeing 737 and Gulfstream G550 — the Rolls Royce of jets.

The Air Force version of the Gulfstream costs $66 million, according to the Department of Defense, and the 737 costs $70 million and is configured with leather seats, two large galleys for cooking and a “distinguished visitor compartment with sleep accommodations.” The purchases must be approved by the Senate.

Maybe now the rich (or car executives) will feel better about boarding their private jets. They can say, “If it’s good enough for Congress, it’s good enough for me.”
